Steel grey lace is good for texturing.  The background of is lace is as interesting as the main pattern.

When using a pasta machine: place a piece of plastic wrap on your sheet of clay, place lace on the plastic wrap, then run through the pasta machine.  This method keeps the lace clean and is both easier and faster that using water, or powder as a release agent.
